Upon entering here, I felt confused, frankly. Was it a bar? Was it a restaurant? Did it look half-finished because it was going for a minimalist, industrial look? Or was it truly halffinished? Was it so cheesy it was cool? Or so cool it was cheesy? I don’t have the answers to these questions. An extended red chintzy bar stool-type-thing ran all along one side of the wall that perplexed me – it was much too narrow to sit on and with dining tables only half that height, were we meant to sit there? My research uncovers photos of the pub’s previous furniture – bar tables had previously accompanied this elongated seat – so tonight’s normalsized chairs and tables don’t make much sense.
As dusk settles in, these questions don’t bother me too much. You’re going to have to get quite squiffy in order to ignore your surroundings, and get squiffy we did with their happy hour deals. Or more specifically, their three pints of Kilkenny for RM55, which went down brilliantly. Their Royal Lychee Sparkler (vodka, champagne, lychee and lychee cordial) was pleasant enough but the Chip ‘N’ Dale Fruit Drop (vodka, crème de cassis, mango juice, orange juice and sour mix) is potent enough to make you come back for more.
The wait staff is friendly and chatty, without being too intrusive. Our bar snack (a plate of crunchy calamari) was a long time coming but it came with a heartfelt apology which was hard to snub. Their happy hour deals are the thing here but not much else – there are other watering holes on this busy street that have an atmosphere that Chip ‘N’ Dale distinctly lacks. Syazlynia Rahim
