 OUR COMPANY

“The business of business should not just be about money, it should be about responsibility. It should be about public good, not private greed.”
Dame Anita Roddick.
Human Rights Activist. Founder of The Body Shop

The Western Malaysian operation includes more than 54 stores and is operated by a The Body Shop Franchisee, Rampai-Niaga Sdn Bhd, under license by The Body Shop International plc. Helmed by Managing Director, Datin Mina Cheah-Foong and Dato’ Simon Foong, the first shop was opened in Plaza Yow Chuan in December 1984, and since then, the business has rapidly grown into a wide network of 54 stores – all situated strategically in major towns throughout West Malaysia. The latest stores were opened in Sunway Giza, Kota Damansara and Jusco Bandaraya, Malacca in February, 2010.

The Body Shop is a values driven, original and ethical high quality skin and body care retailer well-known for creating a niche market sector for naturally-inspired products that are 100% vegetarian. The Body Shop has introduced a generation of consumers to the benefits of a wide range of bestsellers from fragrance products like the classic White Musk range, our award-winning Body Butters from our bath & body range to skin care products like the popular Vitamin E, Vitamin C and Tea Tree Oil ranges. Over the years, The Body Shop has become an authority in the development of unique personal care products, inspired by the use of natural ingredients with proven benefits, drawing on a diversity of cultural knowledge from around the world. The organisation aims to achieve high integrity in its product development, to use minimal packaging and to be honest about the benefits of the products it sells.

The Body Shop Malaysia’s business philosophy is profits with principles. We believe a business has a responsibility to the communities in which it operates. To this end, the company supports and initiates community action and campaigns, which cover a wide range of activities in favour of environmental protection, HIV/AIDS awareness, Child Trafficking and Stop Violence Against Women – a long-term campaign to help address and raise awareness on the issue of domestic violence in Malaysia. The Body Shop® is committed and continues to lead the way for businesses to use their voice for social and environmental change.

The Body Shop Malaysia has been recognised through numerous awards over the years for its retail excellence and values integration efforts. The organisation was recognised for the 2007 Small Company CSR Honourable Award as well as bagging the 2009 CSR Award on Empowerment of Women conferred by the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak in recognition of the organisation’s long-term commitment towards initiating effective values campaigns that are in line with The Body Shop® five core values. The Body Shop® was also awarded the prestigious “Platinum Award for Best Service Retailer” at the MRCA Awards 2006-2007, amongst many, for its outstanding performance in customer service and merchandising in the Malaysian retail industry.

The mantra that “retail is detail” permeates the culture of the entire organisation, which takes great pride in achieving consistent business growth through intensive focus on Key Performance Indicators in the areas of sales, operations, staff training & development, high quality customer service and visual merchandising standards. This extends all the way to the respective Managers of the retail stores who are expected to maintain the highest of retail standards. The organisation invests in projects that will make a difference for customers, the ultimate objective being to give the customer a surprisingly delightful experience in-store. These include progressive renovations of all its existing stores into the new store design that is now showcased in the Suria KLCC flagship store.

The Body Shop is well-known for its customer service and the organisation continually takes measures to improve the quality of its service, in order to meet the increasingly sophisticated demands of customers. Store Consultants receive intensive training on product knowledge and customer care. To evaluate the standard of customer service in-store, the organisation conducts monthly Quality Tracking for all its shops. Results are shared and areas of improvement are addressed with the appropriate action, whilst high performers are recognised.

The Body Shop also aims to nurture a team of committed and motivated employees. Attractive incentive programmes are in place to recognise those who have achieved excellent performance consistently. An overseas trip to the America/Europe continent is just one of the many initiatives implemented to reward deserving employees. The organisation currently employs over 30 head office employees based in USJ, Subang Jaya in various departments: Retail Operations, Marketing & Communications, Learning & Development, Accounts & Administration, IT and Human Resource Management. The head office staff members are geared towards managing and supporting both the brand and the retail structure which has over 300 full-time and part-time retail staff.

OUR VALUES

“If business comes with no moral sympathy or honourable code of behaviours, then God help us all.”
Dame Anita Roddick.
Human Rights Activist. Founder of The Body Shop

We believe there is only one way to beautiful, nature’s way. We’ve believed this for years and still do. We constantly seek out wonderful natural ingredients from all four corners of the globe, and we bring you products bursting with effectiveness to enhance your natural beauty. Whilst we’re doing this we always strive to protect this beautiful planet and the people who depend on it. We don’t do it this way because it’s fashionable. We do it because, to us, it’s the only way.

The Soul Of Beauty
To us, beauty is a feeling, a natural way of being, where character, self-esteem and humour are freely expressed and celebrated. That’s the soul of beauty. It’s not just about looking beautiful. It’s about exuding a vibrant attitude to life.

Our Incredible Planet
Our commitment to seeking and sustaining natural materials and ingredients, and using all our planet’s resources wisely, guides our approach to business. We set challenging environmental targets, which we detail in our bi-annual Values Reports. We were one of the first to make a stand against animal testing in the cosmetics industry, and through The Body Shop Foundation, we continue to fund organisations campaigning to end the needless suffering of animals.

The Community Of PeoplePeople are at the heart and soul of our business. We strive to treat all people in a fair and open fashion, to respect and value their integrity. We’ve never been afraid to champion the vulnerable and the disadvantaged, and we continue to campaign for social justice and human rights. We take enormous pride in our Community Trade programme, not just because we were the first to bring fair trade to our industry, but because of the real difference it makes to the lives of the farmers, producers and their communities.

LIVING OUR VALUES

How do we ensure that our products and their ingredients aren’t tested on animals?

activate self esteem
The Body Shop has always believed passionately that animals should not be used for cosmetic testing. We have never tested our products on animals. Similarly, we insist that all our suppliers have not tested their ingredients on animals for cosmetic purposes.

We comply with the strict requirements of the Humane Cosmetics Standard created by the British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection. Our policy and standards in this area were praised by the BUAV in 2008. In the same year we won the RSPCA Good Business Award for a second time, for our commitment to animal welfare.

We’re incredibly proud of our dedication to this issue, and our global campaigning against cosmetic animal testing. The EU banned animal testing for finished cosmetic products in 2004, and for ingredients in 2009.

We also fund organisations that campaign for increased research into animal testing alternatives.

How do we make sure that our products are responsibly sourced?
activate self esteem
In 1987, The Body Shop launched Community Trade. One of the first examples of fair trade, Community Trade has numerous benefits for our company, our customers and our suppliers. Through trading we can offer our suppliers a stable, long-term income. We can access some of nature’s finest ingredients, which are grown and harvested by expert local farmers. Many of these ingredients are grown using time-honoured techniques, helping to preserve a traditional way of life. In the process, Community Trade allows our suppliers to build better futures for themselves and their communities.

Wherever possible, we seek to use Community Trade ingredients in our products. Over the past two years, spending on Community Trade ingredients, gifts and accessories has risen from £6.4m to £7.4m. We now work with over 25,000 farmers and producers worldwide who supply us with 20 of our naturally derived ingredients and over 60 different gifts and accessories.

By 2010, we aim to use wood from responsibly managed sources, certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), wherever possible.

The devastating environmental effect of palm-oil plantations on deforested land has been well documented. That’s why, as members of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), we’ve worked to create new standards designed to help protect natural biodiversity and workers’ rights. We are proud to say that all of our 7.5m soaps sold annually are now produced using palm oil sourced from a plantation that is successfully audited in line with RSPO regulations.

We ask all our suppliers to sign the Code of Conduct which supports our Ethical Trade Programme, developed to improve conditions for all workers in the supply chain and to uphold their human rights. This code is strictly enforced and monitored to ensure standards are met regarding child labour, discrimination, and employee pay, hours and working conditions.

We’re committed to using responsibly sourced ingredients wherever possible, and working with the communities and people who supply us.

How are we reducing our impact on the environment?
activate self esteem
As a global business, we strongly feel the need to be proactive in the battle against climate change.

We’re constantly seeking new ways to improve our business practices and reduce our carbon footprint. In many of our stores, refits are rolling out that will improve our energy efficiency. New lighting, including store signs that have been successfully trialled, will help to reduce our energy use. We’ve introduced energy-awareness training for all our store staff and have also reduced our air travel.

activate self esteem
We’ve also made great strides in sourcing renewable energy wherever possible to run our offices, warehouses and stores around the world. In the UK alone, 65 per cent of our stores are on renewable energy contracts.

As long-term advocates for reducing waste, we’re now introducing plastic bottles made from 100 per cent recycled material. Our aim is to make all our PET (polyethylene terephthalate) bottles from this plastic – a staggering 30m bottles a year.

In 2008 we replaced all our carrier bags with 100 per cent recycled and recyclable paper bags. We still offer our Community Trade Bag for Life made from 100 per cent organically grown cotton. We’ve also increased the recycled content in our gift packaging.

How do we make our customers and employees feel good about themselves?
activate self esteem
We believe that true beauty comes from confidence, vitality and inner wellbeing. We strive to use imagery that doesn’t play on women’s insecurities, and to bring you products that enhance your natural beauty and express your unique personality.

Our philosophy is that looking good stems directly from feeling good. Where legislation allows, we encourage our employees to learn new skills through our Learning is of Value to Everyone (LOVE) initiative. By funding a range of training courses, events and health treatments, we aim to enhance our staff’s sense of wellbeing.

activate self esteem
Another way to feel good? Doing good. It’s one of the reasons we have a global volunteering policy for all our staff, offering a minimum of three paid volunteering days a year. Our passionate and tireless staff have jumped at this chance to make a difference, working with charities such as The Aldingbourne Trust, which helps people with learning difficulties, and Children on the Edge, which supports the rights of children across the globe.
What do we achieve by campaigning?
activate self esteem
We have always campaigned on issues close to our heart, where we believe we can make a real difference.

Since 1994 we’ve helped to raise funds and global awareness of domestic violence. Since 2004, over £4m1 has been donated to local partners who fund the prevention, support and protection of abused women and children.

Notable successes for this campaign include an organised street march and petition in Seoul, Korea. This was followed by a government commitment to increase spending on domestic-violence shelters and invest in education programmes for the police. In Switzerland we took the message into classrooms, sponsoring a website which engages children in the domestic-violence issue.

activate self esteem
Since 1993 we’ve been campaigning and raising awareness of the issues and taboos surrounding HIV and AIDS. In the last two years we’ve helped raise £1.1m2 for the Staying Alive Foundation, a grassroots youth–awareness project which aims to educate at-risk communities on safe sex, HIV and living with AIDS.

Other campaigns support the fight against human trafficking. Our current Stop The Trafficking of Children and Young People campaign is raising awareness and funds, and offers support for victims, or those at risk.

The Body Shop will always remain dedicated to its mission to campaign for human and civil rights and environmental protection across the globe.

Malaysian Campaigns
Being part of the community is not just about opening a store in the newest, hippest mall in town. It’s also about actively contributing back to society in ways that truly benefit those who need assistance and friendship. We believe in building long-lasting relationships with the people that live and work in the places that we operate in, and we do this by encouraging our staff to volunteer their time and their skills with charities and non-government groups. Over the years, The Body Shop staff have volunteered with many causes that we care for deeply, in hopes that by taking action, we sow the seeds for a better tomorrow for the communities that depend on us to be the beacon in those trying times
